DESIGNED FOR MUCH colder water, the lukewarm shower didn’t faze Addison. He flared his toes trying to rinse the grime away from his webbings. He’d had them reduced on his hands through surgery, but the pain had been horrific, so he opted to leave his feet alone. Most of the time, no one saw them anyhow.

As soon as he finished showering, he should look for a way of contacting the Turing or at least find out if he could cadge an answer to whether there were jammers on locators in these parts. Jammers were a strong possibility, if this was a colony of crooks, and it would explain why the Turing couldn’t home in on Deveral’s singular biosignature in the forest. Then again, they had been a day away.

On the other hand, he didn’t want to leave Deveral alone in this hotel while he went looking for a com-link capable of sending an intragalactic message. Despite the vendor’s assurance the Northman Inn was safe, Addison assumed that meant in comparison to sleeping in the street. Deveral shouldn’t walk on his injured ankle. He’d be lucky if he could walk at all. If he was still laid up tomorrow, then Addison couldn’t risk leaving him in the hotel alone, not if he couldn’t run away from danger.

Besides, he was exhausted. His body ached. Worry kept him from sleeping. How the fuck had a simple escort mission gone so wrong? The idea there could be a traitor on the Turing soured his stomach. No, at the most, they were guilty of not steering clear of a dubious colony. In his gut, he felt sure the attack had been to stop Deveral from getting to the conference. Since the Coalition supported the conference, they were in the clear.

Opportunistic pirates would have had a plan if this were a routine kidnapping. They’d have followed them down or had atmospheric craft waiting when their spacecraft knocked the shuttle off route. So that left them out too. No, it was someone who knew Deveral’s mission. Deveral’s people, expecting a happy reunion with their own lost colony, might have been lax on security. Maybe they’d told the Wybrecheans the route. Deveral did say a Wybrechean faction opposed the meeting. Addison sighed and thought of Weyba and all the other attendants at Deveral’s temple. They’d be frantic now, knowing their Sacred Kin was in danger, if not already dead.

Finally, the water ran cold, and he wasn’t going to get any cleaner. Addison dried off and followed Deveral’s lead by wrapping a towel around his hips. There wasn’t any laundry service in this place, but he could improvise. When he peeked out, Deveral was snoring softly on the bed. Addison collected all their various changes of clothing—there was one set each left still clean—and dumped them all in the shower’s tub. He tossed in some of the soap, knelt, and scrubbed and rinsed them in the cold water until his shoulder screamed. Frustrated, he left them to soak longer. Maybe he could run some warmer water through them in an hour.
